AbstractThis guidance is intended to inform general practitioners about the clinical and public health actions in the event of a deliberate release of smallpox. It provides background information (what is it?, why is a deliberate release a serious threat?, transmission, what is the incubation period?, how do I know my patient has it?, complications and prognosis?) and management issues (surveillance and detection of deliberate releases of smallpox, management of persons exposed to smallpox, protection of frontline workers, isolation of people with suspected or confirmed smallpox, treatment of smallpox, immunisation, contact details for national specialists).
