HPA Interim guidelines for action in the event of a deliberate release - Plague

Author(s)Health Protection Agency
AbstractThe HPA interim guideline covers: background and clinical information; clinical procedures; laboratory procedures; Public Health procedures; and a list of national specialists. The creation of an infectious plague aerosol is not easy, but there may be a threat from the deliberate release of large quantities of Y. pestis, in aerosol. This threat is considered severe because: the organism can cause severe rapidly fatal infection; secondary cases may arise from contact with cases of pneumonic plague; and the disease has previously had a reputation that caused disruption in the population.
